Tamiya Incorporated (Kabushiki gaisha Tamiya) is a Japanese manufacturer of radio controlled cars, plastic model kits, battery and solar powered educational models, sailboat models, acrylic and enamel model paints and various modeling tools and supplies. The company was founded by Yoshio Tamiya (ja) in Shizuoka, Japan, in 1946.
The metal molds were produced from plans which had the concept of being "easy to understand and build, even for beginners". Even the box art was consistent with this throughout the company.
The company has gained a reputation among hobbyists of producing models of outstanding quality and accurate scale detail. Its philosophy is reflected directly in the company's motto, "First in Quality Around the World". Tamiya's most renown RC models include the Avante, Egress, Hornet and Grasshopper.
History[edit | edit source]
Several years prior to Tamiya's venture into the world of RC cars, one of Tamiya's designers, Fumito Taki, had attempted to modify the M4 Sherman static tank into a radio-controlled model. The idea was to have a static "animated" model above all and not a pure R/C model. Fumito Taki had electrified a Formula 1 of the Big Scale series in his spare time and seeing Fumito Taki play in the parking lot during a work break intrigued Shunsaku Tamiya, the president of Tamiya. The mold of the Porsches had been a heavy investment and it did not pay for itself hence Shunsaku Tamiya saw an opportunity to leverage his investment by electrifying the Porsche. 100,000 models of the Tamiya Porsche 934 Turbo RSR sold in the first year and bombarded Tamiya to the top of the RC industry.
Tamiya has had a long standing business relationship with electric motors manufacturer Mabuchi (ja). Product ranges such as the SH version equipped practically all Tamiya models until the 90s before giving way to the J version of Johnson Electric that is currently found in present RC cars.

Products reference numbers[edit | edit source]
Within its model groups, Tamiya uses a different number as a reference for each new individual kit or to differentiate an original kit from a rerelease.
Upon launch of the first Tamiya RC model, the Porsche 934 Turbo RSR and for the first 30 models, the first Tamiya numbering system was used. The reference consisted of a series of letters and digits: RA-1201 (Porsche 934 Turbo RSR), RA-1015 (Rough Rider) up to the 30th and last in that serie: RA-1030 (Honda Formula 02 (CS)). "RA" refers to the production line (RC models), the first pair of digits (10, 12) to the kit scale (1/10th or 1/12th), and the last pair of digits is the kit number.
The second numbering system was a simplification over the first one as it removed the scale reference and changed the production line letters by a single code: 58. The first kit in that serie was 5831 (Brabham BT-50 BMW Turbo) and the last one was 5865 (Clod Buster). Because this serie could not allow to go higher than 99, Tamiya moved to a new numbering system.
An additional digit "0" was introduced after the "58" production line code. The Super Sabre (kit 58066) started this 3rd numbering system, and it is still active today. This will allow Tamiya to go up to 1000 references using this system.
Old models references where modified afterward to comply with the new numbering system and make it easier to position the cars chronologically in the present numbering system.
Limited Edition Tamiya kits may receive a 49xxx reference number. This includes some re-releases Chrome Metallic editions (49337 Wild Willy 2), (49154 Tyrell P34 Six Wheeler), Gold editions (49459 Lunch Box) or racing chassis that yield world championship titles to Tamiya such as 49394 TRF415MSX Marc Rheinard. This reference type is also used for limited series of spare parts (specific color or material).
Finally, factory assembled and painted models received a 57xxx reference type. Normally, they are identical to their counterpart kit, but they may feature different dampers (friction instead of hydraulic) or speed controller (mechanical instead of electronic). On the other hand, the body is already painted and decorated and the model is provided with a complete radio set, stick pack and charger (upon local Reseller choice).

Engine cars[edit | edit source]
Tamiya released its first nitro engine RC car in 1994 with the TR-15t 2-wheel drive stadium truck followed by the Mad Bison in 2000. Tamiya would later release several other nitro RC vehicle including the Terra Crusher, the TNX (TMG-03) and the Nitrage 5.2 amongst others.
Strength and weaknesses[edit | edit source]
Tamiya's first nitro vehicle, was the TR-15t which was released in 1994. TR-15t is a 2-wheel drive stadium truck with a 0.15 in³ (2½ cm³) nitro engine. Since at the time, electric vehicles already offered 4-wheels-drive, the TR-15t was not a very popular vehicle.
Tamiya released its second nitro vehicle the Mad Bison in 2000, a four-wheel drive on-road car with off-road tires, utilizing the previously released F-150 body. It was poportly designed and its poorly located reduction gear bulged under the chassis to compensate for larger tires caused the vehicle to bottomed out easily. It was also thought that its suspension was inappropriate for the truck.
Both the TR-15t and the Mad Bison were not very popular vehicles at the time.
