A two-wheel drive (2WD) RC car is based on a chassis that transfers all the power of the electric motor or combustion engine either to the rear (rear-wheel drive or RWD) or front (front-wheel drive or FWD) wheels. They differ from four-wheel drive vehicles where the power is transfered to all four wheels.

Two-wheel drive RC cars are cheaper and lighter than four-wheel drive cars but they offer less traction both in straight lines and in corners and are thus harder to pilot.
